In a bid to check bogus voting in their association elections, the members of the United cycles parts and manufacturers association(UCPMA) have introduced biometric cards. The cards will contain thumb impressions of the registered members. A machine at the association office will match a thumb impression taken on election day with a previous stored one. The card making is in process and they will be delivered to each member after their biometric impressions are recorded.

The elections of this Asia’s largest association will be held on September 15. D S Chawla, the current president of UCPMA said: “ I lost three elections in the past due to bogus voting. Identity cards have been given to the members, but after exchanging the photos on the cards, many fake voters have voted in the past. Now biometric thumb impression will check bogus voting and it is a transparent manner as well”.

This system will also allow the association to check the attendance of members during meetings. A total of Rs 22,500 has been spent on the new machine. The members, however, have welcomed the step but point out that it should have been done much before the elections. With 2,240 registered members, doubts have been raised if the cards will be ready before election day. Chawla, however, said: “The work is almost complete and members will get cards much before the election day”.

Meanwhile the incumbent president Chawla now has the support of many who belonged to his rival group under Charanjit Vishvkarma. Varinder Kapur, who used to be in the Charanjit group has now joined hands with Chawla while Inderjit Singh Navyug who in the previous election contested against Chawla for the president’s post is now in his group. Pardeep Wadhawan, Ajit Kumar and few others who were in the Charanjit group are now standing by his side while there have been a few defections from the Chawla group as well.
